- Maunde is self-taught, having discovered his passion for art at a young age in Mozambique.
- Growing up without artworks in his home, he was inspired by the pieces he encountered in the houses of others and by visiting the home of celebrated Mozambican artist Malangatana Ngwenya on his way to school — an early influence on his evolving creative path.
- In 1988, he relocated to Johannesburg, where he continued to develop his artistic voice and began painting professionally.
